The Virginia Economic Review is VEDP's quarterly publication. Each issue provides an insider look at Virginia’s economy, its diverse array of world-class companies, its amazing talent, and its stunning natural beauty, as well as insights from national thought leaders. This Land is Our Land

This infographic was created for a course in Graphic Design in Cartography where I was informed to create a longform infographic with a bivariate map. After spending some time working for the National Park Service, one thing that was evident to me was lack of funding to complete the NPS mission. The National Park Service is no exception to politics and Washington bureaucracy. This graphic was created to expose that.

Day's Drive

This visual was created for Virginia Economic Development Partnership to show Virginia's proximity to the U.S. population in a one and two day drive. This visual has been used by VEDP in a number of marketing materials including large banner posters, website content, and brochure content.

Vintage NPS Tiles

This tile set was created for a course in Graphic Design in Cartography. The mission of the project was to create tiles styled after a piece of art. I used 1930 era National Park Service advertisements as my inspiration. As these tiles were built with Mapbox Studio Classic, they are no longer visible in Mapbox but I hope to remake them someday in Mapbox Studio!

Pacific Northwest Bicycle Race

This terrain/landcover map was created for a course in Graphic Design in Cartography. The mission of the project was to create a landcover/terrain basemap and create a suggested route for a long distance bicycle race.

This poster was created for my senior capstone project at James Madison University. It was created as a way to highlight the history and growth potential of the wine industry in Virginia.

Virginia is for Craft Brewers

This Esri Story Map was created as a marketing tool to attract existing craft breweries in other states to create a new location in Virginia. The cached, raster basemap was created in ArcMap and the content was assembled using ArcGIS Online.

Shenandoah National Park Visitor Guide

Constructed an application using ArcGIS API for JS for visitors to view Shenandoah’s vast bank of visitor resources and contribute data of their own. Collected data from Open Street Map and personal knowledge, created a database using ArcSDE on Microsoft SQL Server, and published data to ArcGIS for Server. The application is no longer live but a video demonstration can be viewed below.

Constructed an application using ArcGIS API for JS to allow local and regional economic development partners to enter, update, and delete commercial real estate data. The application is no longer live but a video demonstration can be viewed below.

Virginia County Health Ranking Explorer

This data exploration tool was built using D3.js. It allows users to explore various heath indicators across Virginia's localities. The tool uses geojson locality boundaries joined to a .csv of health indicators.

What's Killing the Trees?

This tool was constructed as a partnership project between Sam Grosenick and myself. At the time, Sam lived in Anchorage, Alska and myself in Richmond, Virginia so we worked around conflicting schedules and time zones to produce this product. The application was built with Leaflet.js and displays the threats of various pests on tree species.

Internal How Virginia Compares

Constructed a web application using D3.js to utilize VEDP’s suite of U.S. economic data. The tool allows VEDP’s internal staff to compare Virginia to competitor states in key economic drivers and download a VEDP graphic standard compliant visual for use in presentations and marketing material. Coordinated between UW-Madison and VEDP to use the project for school credit. The application is behind VEDP's firewall but a video demonstration is linked below.
